How to trim the dracaena at home

Pruning dracaena is sanitary and decorative. In the first case, the rotten and dried parts of the bush are removed, as well as the leaves and roots damaged by insects or mold. In the second, part of the maternal trunk is cut to stimulate the growth of lateral shoots and leaves. The crown of dracaena becomes thick and lush. Removal of diseased and healthy parts of the ornamental shrub is carried out with the right tool and at a strictly defined time, otherwise the plant will weaken and die.

 How to cut dracaena

Spring or autumn

Pruning shoots - stress for dracaena. It takes time for the plant to tighten its wounds and recover. Removal is not carried out in the autumn and winter months. From about October, the ornamental shrub is preparing for hibernation and cold. If you deprive it of a part of the maternal trunk, the immunity of an exotic flower will weaken, and it will become an ideal target for attacks of fungi and insects.The exception is sanitary pruning. Rotten and dried leaves, as well as branches clean at any time of the year to protect the bush from further spread of infection.

Decorative pruning is carried out in the middle of spring. Sometimes the procedure is transferred to May or the first of June. Dracaena, awakened from winter sleep, is actively expanding and produces a lot of juice. Any damage is quickly tightened, and fresh kidneys are formed at the site of the removed maternal stem.

It is not recommended to cut the dracaena in the middle or end of summer, when the air temperature rises and the humidity drops. The ground in the hill and the root system constantly dry up, the flower becomes vulnerable. Dracaena, weakened by the heat, after removal of the shoots will not be able to resist spider mites and other pests.

In winter, cut ornamental bushes with broken tops. If part of the trunk is no longer due to mechanical damage, the remaining wound is trimmed with a sharp knife or scissors. Torn edges slow down and complicate healing. But when pruning in winter dracaena provide full watering, proper lighting and water.

Instruments

The decorative bush is unpretentious and hardy, but even it can die if bacteria or rust from a knife get into the wound. Clipping room palm spend clean and sharpened tools. A pruner, regular scissors or a kitchen knife will do. Wear medical gloves or rubber for washing dishes. During the procedure, sterile cotton wool and an antiseptic bottle should be at hand:

  • peroxide;
  • ethyl alcohol;
  • tinctures of calendula or eucalyptus;
  • Chlorhexidine.

If nothing suitable was found, use vodka. With an antiseptic, wipe the tool blade after removing each part of the plant. It is forbidden to use rusty or blunt knives that can not cut the escape from the first time. Poor quality tools injure the plant, slowing its recovery. After improper pruning, deformed shoots are formed.

An open wound is an ideal breeding ground for bacteria. Fresh cut necessarily sprinkled with activated or charcoal. The billet has antiseptic and drying properties.

The coal powder is replaced with a paraffin candle.Melted wax cauterizes the wounds and protects against germs. After paraffin treatment, the cut is wrapped in moss. Sphagnum has a porous structure, thanks to which it retains moisture and creates favorable conditions for the formation of healthy and strong buds.

Healing is accelerated by growth promoters. Make-up is added to the water for spraying. The most common drug intended for treating dracenum is called “Zircon”.

Step-by-step instruction

The ornamental shrub is pruned when:

  • he has one stem, on which there are few leaves;
  • young shoots deformed;
  • plant height exceeds 2-2.5 m.

From the top of the dracaena retreat 10-15 cm. You can do more if the owner of the plant needs a neat and squat flower. The main thing is to leave the stump, which stands 20–25 cm above the substrate.

Instruments are disinfected immediately before the procedure. Sharp pruners remove the selected part of the ornamental shrub. If it was not possible to cut off the mother trunk the first time, it can not be broken hands. Parts that are not separated from the flower, cut off with a sharpened knife.The sharp blade leaves even wounds without torn edges.

The next stage is the cleansing of the remaining stem from the leaves. 10 cm recede from the stump, leaving only the bark. Buds, shoots and leaves that grow on this segment, cleaned with a knife.

Gardeners who have chosen wood or activated carbon as an antiseptic will grind it in a mortar. Powder sprinkle abundantly fresh cut. The treatment can be repeated several times until the dracaena's wound dries.

If, instead of activated carbon, the owner of the flower stopped on a paraffin candle, not only a lighter, but also a disposable plastic knife will be useful to him. The cutlery allows you to control where the melted wax goes. Liquid droplets of paraffin leave burns on the leaves. The lower part of the plant, which remained green, can be closed with a plastic bag. The cover is removed after cauterization.

Sphagnum is wound around a dried-up slice. A thick layer of moss is fixed on the trunk with rubber bands or tapes. A cellophane bag is put on top, the edges are tied around the process. The polyethylene cover is removed once a week to allow access to oxygen by the mother trunk.

The package and sphagnum create a humid tropical climate that stimulates the growth of new buds. The first shoots are like small droplets or peas. If they appeared on the stem, the moss and the polyethylene cover are no longer needed.

An ornamental shrub spends a lot of fluid when forming buds. The substrate in which the dracaena lives is moistened daily with a spray bottle. Add a few drops of growth stimulant to the water. After the shoots appear, the makeup is removed.

Care after trimming

Removed parts of dracaena do not have to be thrown away. Blanks can be germinated in a glass with warm water or a container with a sphagnum. Sprouts that have acquired their own roots are planted in a pot in which the mother's stem lives, or a new pot of small size.

 Care for dragon season after trimming

The dragon flower after decorative trimming is hidden from direct ultraviolet radiation. Indoor flower is restored in the twilight at a temperature of + 24-26 degrees. As long as the cut point does not drag on, it is prohibited to add fertilizer to the water for irrigation. An exception is the growth stimulator.

The ornamental shrub, on which the young shoots have formed, is returned to the southern sill. Sunlight stimulates the growth of the kidneys.To shoots developed evenly, the pot is periodically turned clockwise. Due to this, the sun will fall on all parts of the bush. If the shoots are deformed due to the wrong light regime, they are cut next spring or summer so that direct specimens with dense foliage grow on the place of ugly twigs.

Dracaena belongs to the group of unpretentious and hardy indoor flowers. But even such a strong plant needs care and timely pruning. Removal of the stem is carried out with clean and sharp instruments, and after the procedure antiseptics are used. Coal and paraffin protect dracaena from infection, and sphagnum and recharge stimulate the emergence of new shoots.
