How to identify a left-handed or right-handed child?

Each person has two hemispheres of the brain - left and right. Depending on how dominant one or another part of the body is, one of these hemispheres may become the main one. It is this factor that is responsible for what kind of hand the child will use - right or left.

What are hemispheres responsible for?

So, an important role is played by the factor which hemisphere is developed in a baby - since this will influence his further character and abilities.

  1. Left It is responsible for the propensity to exact sciences - for example, mathematics, algebra, physics. Such children tend to think analytically; they love logic games. The left hemisphere controls the work of the right limbs.
  2. Right. Responsible for creativity. Such children have good spatial thinking, they are sensitive, emotional natures. From them grow poets, musicians. Also, people with a well-developed left hemisphere have a tendency to draw to develop various schemes and draw drawings. Such children often have mood swings, and their gestures are very developed, and they speak quickly. Manages the work of the left limbs.

There is an opinion that already at birth the child has a dominant hemisphere, but it is not. They develop unevenly, the child can use different hands at different periods of his life.

How to determine?

Surely it will be interesting for parents to find out which particular hemisphere is dominant in their baby. Already by three years it is possible to do it, because the child can already quite hold a spoon on his own, he plays with toys and takes various objects into the pens in order to study them.

So, let us consider how it is possible to determine whether your child will be left-handed or right-handed:

  1. Track in what river the child holds a toothbrush.
  2. If he crosses his arms over his chest - pay attention to the one that will be on top - she will be dominant.
  3. Ask the baby to collect his hands in the lock and watch which finger will be on top.
  4. Let the child stroke the toy - the hand that he will use will become dominant.

Also plays a big role heredity. If you have, for example, the majority of right-handers, most likely, the child will write and do most manipulations with his right hand.

Why not retrain?

Just 100 years ago, all teachers said that children should write in schools only with their right hand. If a child used his left hand - he often became an outcast, both teachers and parents and peers pressured him.

Therefore, as soon as the process of preparation for school began, the parents actively retrained their baby - sometimes, even by barbaric methods. After a while, of course, the child got used to writing with his right hand, and did it on an intuitive level, however, such retraining is never a gift. If the child is retrained from a left-handed person, he may have problems with spelling, he is not focused, he may make many mistakes during writing, and writes with a slant in the other direction.

Therefore, if you want your child to be happy, to boast good performance in school - no need to go against his will.

Recommendations for parents

A left-handed child often writes and paints in a mirror image. Your task is to teach him to properly navigate in space, to tell you exactly how to write letters, to give illustrative examples.

It is possible that a left-handed person up to 3-4 years old will not attend kindergarten - due to the fact that it is difficult for a child to adapt to the modes and schedules. Be prepared for frequent mood swings - this has nothing to do with a harmful character - left-handers are very sensitive and emotional personalities. It is important for parents to be patient, to ensure that the baby can cope with their emotions. As for classes at the table - it is important to provide the child with maximum comfort - the lamp, textbooks and all the other necessary attributes should be placed on the right.

What are some other methods for determining?

If your baby is already at a conscious age, that is, he turned 5-6 years old, in this case you can try the following tricks that will help you to recognize whether your baby is left-handed or right-handed:

  1. Give the child a grater and ask to erase the drawing.
  2. Track which hand will lead while using the scissors.
  3. Ask the child to pour liquid from one glass to another (they should both be half full).
  4. Put a small object in a glass, give the child a spoon and ask to get the object out of the glass.
  5. Ask your child to open the bottle, the cap of which is screwed on.

If during all these manipulations the child uses the left hand, most likely, he will write with it in school as well, and in the household plan he will also use the left hand. Naturally, in order to get the most accurate result, it is advisable to ask your child to pass as many tests as possible. When performing certain actions, the child will unconsciously use exactly the hand which is more comfortable to use - therefore, it is the leading one.

Please note: Parents must ensure equal access to all objects that surround the child. No need to put objects on the right (for example) closer, and those on the left - further. Perhaps this will confuse the baby and he will just take the thing that is closer to him. All tests should be carried out in a calm, friendly atmosphere, and even more so, it is impossible to put pressure on your child in any case.If a child is not set up to conduct tests, it is not necessary to force him.

No need to try to “blind” from your child a person that he is not - in the future he may choose a completely wrong profession and will become an unhappy person. In any case, the task of each parent is to listen to his child, guide him in life and help him adapt to this difficult world.
