How to properly store removable dentures

Modern achievements of dentistry are striking in their methods. Today, a person who, for one reason or another, has lost his teeth, does not feel discomfort - aesthetic or physical, because he can replace them with prostheses. Removable dentures can be made of different materials, they represent different shapes and curves. Modern dentures are very comfortable to wear - they are easy to fix and remove. However, in order for the prosthesis to serve you longer, you need to care for it as carefully as you would for your own teeth.

How to properly store removable dentures

How to store dentures at night

This issue worries many owners of dentures. Since childhood, we remember that our grandparents dipped their dentures in a glass of water. Modern designs are made of materials that do not crack from oxygen and can be stored without liquid. However, before you start using the denture yourself, you need to make sure at the dentist that your denture is not afraid to remain without water. Otherwise, it can be stored in any antiseptic liquid. In pharmacies, you can find special formulations that need to be diluted with water (about one spoon per cup of water). The prosthesis is placed in this solution, not only to provide a moist environment, but also to disinfect the solid surface of the structure. If a special antiseptic is not at hand, you can dip the prosthesis in boiled water. This will help you in hiking conditions. In no case do not use water from the tap for storing the prosthesis, it contains a lot of bleach, which corrodes the surface of the product.

If your prosthesis is not afraid of dryness, it can be stored in a special case. However, remember that the container for storing dentures must be regularly cleaned - microbes can also accumulate on its walls. Also, the prosthesis can be kept at night in a simple cotton fabric, but it should also be regularly washed or replaced with a fresh one. In general, many dentures do not necessarily take off at night. If you are comfortable, you can sleep right in them.

How to clean dentures

To prosthesis served for a long time and was not the cause of the development of inflammation in the gums, you need to properly care for him. Cleaning the denture is one of the main conditions for its careful storage.

  1. Twice a day, the denture, as well as your own teeth, must be cleaned of plaque. To do this, the prosthesis must first be removed. To clean dentures, special toothpaste is used, the composition of which gently cleanses germs and spares the construction material. For dentures, there is also a special brush with thin and long bristles, which are designed for deep cleaning of the gum hollow. After cleaning dentures, do not forget to clean your teeth (if any). To do this, use a separate brush.
  2. After each meal and any snack, rinse dentures with clean water. For this it is better to use bottled or boiled water, rather than running water. In addition to the fact that it contains chlorine, it can be infected by bacteria, which, after close contact, can lead to inflammation of the gums (especially if there are small open wounds).
  3. Once a week, the prosthesis should be soaked in an antiseptic solution (even if you are not used to removing the prosthesis at night). It is usually prescribed by a doctor depending on the material of construction. Such drugs can be easily purchased at the pharmacy. They are sold in the form of a liquid solution or effervescent tablet. Soak the prosthesis in an antiseptic should not less than 3-4 hours. After soaking, be sure to go over the prosthesis with a brush to remove all softened particles of plaque.
  4. Even if you follow all the recommendations and do regular cleaning of the dentures, every six months you need to take the design to the dentist for cleaning. Professional equipment will help you to make a deep and thorough cleaning that will extend the life of the prosthesis.
  5. Sometimes, without proper care, the prosthesis may darken, and many owners wonder if the prosthesis can be whitened? In no case can not use whitening toothpastes, because they have a lot of abrasive particles that simply scratch the surface of the prosthesis. The prosthesis is much softer than tooth enamel, therefore, it cannot be cleaned with ordinary paste. For deep cleaning, you can use an ultrasonic cleaner, which will get rid of microorganisms on the surface of the prosthesis and significantly bleach it.

These are basic guidelines for cleaning and storing the prosthesis. If you wear dentures, the following tips will also be useful.

Dental prosthesis care features

If you wear dentures, use fixing gels, creams and pastes. Many of them contain in their composition antibacterial components that inhibit the development of microorganisms in the zone of contact of the prosthesis and gums. In addition, these clips facilitate the process of getting used to the prosthesis.

 Dental prosthesis care features

If you started to wear a prosthesis, you need to reconsider your diet. On the one hand, it is necessary to exclude too hard and viscous products that can get stuck between the gum and the structure. On the other hand, receiving only soft food does not give the necessary load on the gums and the bony part of the jaw. You must exclude solid foods - crackers, candies, nuts. In addition, you need to abandon toffee, fresh white bread, viscous porridge and other dishes that can penetrate under the prosthesis. Meat should be well stewed to be comfortable to chew. However, do not rush to switch to soft and chopped food. You need to regularly eat vegetables and fruits, pre-cut into small pieces. For now, give up carrots, but apples and pears are fine.

Acrylic denture needs more thorough and intensive cleaning, since the surface of its material is porous. Food remains and microbes accumulate in the smallest pores. Over time, acrylic becomes rough, which further contributes to the development of bacteria. If the acrylic prosthesis is not treated with due care, after a while it will have an unpleasant smell. Nylon is more practical - its surface is smooth and even. However, it is not recommended to brush it - only with special cleaners. In addition, the nylon prosthesis should not be dipped in hot water. Unlike acrylic, nylon does not cling to the gums like a suction cup, because it cannot fit so tightly. Therefore, in the absence of teeth in the upper jaw, it is recommended to put on an acrylic prosthesis.

But plastic teeth are considered the most comfortable and effective when chewing. The disadvantages of such prostheses can be attributed to their size - they are quite massive and take up a lot of space in the mouth. In addition, the plastic prosthesis partially overlaps the palate and some taste buds.In the care of a plastic prosthesis is not capricious - if it is regularly and properly cleaned, it can last up to five years.

A prosthesis is a real salvation for those who have not retained their teeth. With the prosthesis, you can safely eat, smile, talk and laugh. Properly selected prosthesis with proper care will serve you for at least five years. Store and clean dentures properly!
