How to breed wavy parrots at home

Budgies are quite popular as pets. Fans of feathered friends strive to create optimal conditions for the birds so that they feel comfortable. Many owners want not only to maintain and care for parrots, but also seek to increase their number by breeding. It is important to understand that the creation of offspring is troublesome, it requires attention to detail and compliance with the characteristics of the content. Consider the basic aspects in order, we give practical recommendations.

 How to breed wavy parrots

Under what conditions reproduction is possible.

  1. For a start it is worth noting that only healthy parrots can mate. The role of parents is not suitable for sick and weak birds that tolerate rehabilitation. They will not be able to lay eggs, so that reproduction becomes impossible.
  2. In addition, it is important to consider the conditions under which chicks can be born. This includes sexual maturity of parrots, a properly balanced diet and the place of feeding, the duration of daylight hours, the nesting house, the temperature regime (about 24-26 degrees).
  3. By the time you decide to breed parrots, make sure that the birds have reached puberty and can reproduce offspring. The best indicator for birds of this kind is the age from 1 year to 8 years. If you go beyond these limits, the babies hatch out sick or weak, the female can die, because her body is not formed for laying.
  4. As a fertile females are not suitable individuals suffering from obesity. They often have tumors, and birds hatch eggs poorly, rolling down from them. You should also pay attention to bird plumage: if it sheds, breeding becomes impossible. Feed the female with vitamins, otherwise she will not be able to endure laying.

Proper pairing

  1. For the successful production of offspring is extremely important to choose the right pair of budgies. It should be clarified that in order to obtain strong offspring it is necessary to choose individuals from different parents. Another option involves the presence of possible anomalies in chicks, as well as diseases associated with heredity.
  2. When choosing a female and male, give preference to individuals that have previously mated with other birds. If you combine parrots in an artificial way, they can “pull” with a reproduction of about 2-3 years.
  3. If the selected parrots are completely healthy and active, they mate quickly enough. The first meeting of newly minted family men takes place in the cage set aside for them. If you notice that birds do not seek to pull feathers out of each other, but, on the contrary, get along, it means that you can expect offspring in the near future.
  4. When the male chooses a female, he begins to care for her violently. This behavior is manifested in the cleaning of feathers to its “lady”, feeding from beak to beak. Also, the males often make certain sounds like dovish songs, raise the tuft and actively flapping their wings.
  5. As for the female, if she accepts courtship, she starts nodding her head, kissing her gentleman in her beak, close her eyes. The girl tries to keep close to the boy, not paying attention to the cries of other parrots (if there are any).
  6. Attachment of budgerigars to each other persists for life. Coitus occurs in minutes, as a rule, the owners do not notice this. In some cases, birds mate about 7–20 days until the process is launched. If mating has occurred, budgerigar can find its mate among other birds. They spend a lot of time together.
  7. There are often cases when a couple does not add up to the "newlyweds." In such situations, the female ignores the male, sits on the side, behaves aggressively when it appears. Birds tear out feathers to each other, showing their disinterest. Try replacing the rebel boy with a more relaxed roommate, watch the reaction of the female.

Suitable breeding season

  1. The best period for the breeding of budgies is considered to be the time from June to September. At this interval, the birds have enough daylight, warmth and food rich in vitamins.
  2. Experienced zoologists do not recommend starting pandering parrots in early spring. In March and April, pets are still weakened after the last spring. Their bodies do not have enough vitamins, birds will not be able to create healthy offspring.
  3. Nestlings can hatch much later, for example, in the winter season. However, in this case, you need to create additional conditions. This includes lengthening the daylight hours to 14-16 hours using fluorescent lamps or special lights. It is also important to maintain the temperature at 20 degrees. The female should be fed with fresh herbs 3 times a day.

Preparation for breeding

  1. Start cooking parrots for breeding 2-3 weeks before the moment when you are going to hang out the nesting house. Increase daylight hours to 15 hours with the backlight, watch the temperature in the room, it should not fall below the mark of 18-20 degrees. Otherwise, the birds will spend extra energy to keep warm.
  2. So that the parrots do not start premature molting, increase the daylight gradually.First add 2 hours, then 1 hour, alternate the interval until you reach 15 hours. If the body temperature of the animals is increased, it will cause the death of the embryo in the future.

Nesting house for breeding

  1. The nest for breeding parrots should be sufficiently dimensional, bright, clean and warm. We can not allow the cramped space, otherwise the parents will destroy the offspring. Adhere to dimensions: height - from 65 cm., Width - from 60 cm., Length - from 70 cm.
  2. Since females in the breeding season change their habitual behavior, they begin to gnaw everything that is in sight. These include, first of all, the bars of the cage, toys, and even the feathers of the male. To avoid such consequences, provide the "lady" with all necessary. Make sure that the house has fresh carrots, fruit branches of different diameters and lengths, sharpened fortified stone, etc.
  3. Nest house must necessarily have a litter. In its role is usually hay or sawdust, which interfere with the dried pharmacy chamomile (drug). The plant prevents birds from being infected with parasites and has a beneficial effect on the nervous state of pets.
  4. The nest is placed in a cage no earlier than 7 days before the start of the intended reproduction (egg laying). Before you do this, you will have to sanitize all the property of the birds and the cage itself. To properly carry out the procedure, wash the items with a solution of baby soap, then dry the metal elements in the oven. Put plastic parts in the sun, wait about 6 hours.
  5. The more successful the breeding will be if you do not neglect the elementary rules. Light day should be 15 hours, not less. The optimum temperature of the room in which the cell is located varies in the range of 18-20 degrees. In winter, it is necessary to use artificial lighting and heating, in summer it is enough to open the curtains. As soon as dusk begins on the street, immediately turn on the overhead light. Do not allow drafts in the room.

Feeding parrots during the breeding season

  1. It should be clarified that the nutrition of parrots should be comprehensive, balanced. Also, every day it is necessary to change the water, providing birds with around the clock access to the drinking bowl.Make sure the feeder is filled with fresh plant food. As soon as the product starts to wilt, replace it with a fresh one.
  2. To strengthen the immune system, prepare a vitamin supplement, give it 1 time in 3 days. Mix half boiled chicken eggs (diced) with half grated carrots and eggshell, powdered. You can replace the last ingredient with calcium for birds, which is sold in a veterinary pharmacy.
  3. Particularly useful food for wavy parrots are germinated seeds. Increase the average daily portion by 2 times, starting the procedure 7 days before laying the first egg. In this case, additional calcium may be fortified chalk and a whetstone with grains. Periodically attach the branches of fruit trees to the birds. They will help shake off the beak and create an extra nest.

Hatching

 Parrot eggs hatching

  1. To determine whether the female is pregnant or not, a visual inspection will help you. The bird has an increased appetite, it loses feathers on the chest, and the stomach becomes round. The male at this time is sitting near the nest, tweeting, feeding his "lady".Such signs suggest that the first egg will hatch soon.
  2. Juveniles lay fewer eggs than their older generation. The male does not incubate, the expectant mother is involved in this. After 6-7 days after laying the last egg, they must be checked. If the egg is fertilized, it will have a gray-white shade (matte), while unfertilized ones will be glossy yellow-white or spotty.
  3. As a rule, the duration of incubation is 18-20 days. If the eggs lie in the nesting place longer than 3 weeks, they must be removed. Check the house every 3 days, pull out dead chicks and eggs with a dead fetus. After the first chick has hatched, reduce the diet of pets, excluding germinated seeds. At the same time, increase the number of vegetables that contain carotene.
  4. When the chicks reach the age of 14 days, the behavior of the female will change significantly. She will become calmer, will begin to leave nesting more often. During this period, clean the house from litter and plumage, gently lifting the chicks with a gloved hand (!). Change the litter, then return the babies to their place.
  5. Chicks begin to fly out of the cage after 1.5 months.Set them aside from the mother 60 days after the birth, and then return to the common house after three months. Remove nesting, reduce the couple's hour day to 9 o'clock, give the female only grain food to stop laying.

As a rule, parrots are considered to be the most prolific by the age of 2-4 years. They can bear 3 offspring for 12 months, provided proper maintenance. The older the birds, the harder they multiply. Take into account the health of the pet, previously transferred diseases that have difficulty feeding, sleeping, behavior to the opposite sex.
