Thyroid scutellinia - description, mushroom toxicity

Thyroid scutellin is a marsupial mushroom belonging to the pyronemic family (genus skutellinium). In addition, representatives of this species are ascomycetes, that is, their structure implies the presence of a special spore bag, which, in fact, is the main organ of sporulation. The Latin name for this mushroom is Scutellinia scutellata. Also often, this inedible marsupial type of fungus is called saucer-shaped scutellins.

 Thyme scutellinia

I would like to note that the pyronemic family of mushrooms are the most diverse in terms of their ecology and morphology. Their representatives, in particular, thyroid scutelline, form characteristic cup-shaped apothecia of different sizes. In addition, the species of this family most often differ from others in their rather bright and eye-catching color, as a rule, they are juicy orange and red colors, which is caused by the presence of carotenoid pigments in the structure of fungi.

Description of the species

The type of mushrooms presented to attention has rather modest sizes and most often the fruit body of a saucer-shaped skutelline does not exceed the size of a regular coin. At the beginning of its development, the shape of young specimens resembles a ball, with the growth of a mushroom it becomes discoid with a small recess inside. The inner part of the skutellinia is bright red, the surface has a paler color - most often yellow-brown.

The edge of the fruit body of this type of mushroom is densely dotted with small hairs that resembles stubble, the hair color is dark. At the edges of the fruit body is located more densely, forming a kind of fringe.

The pulp of the fungus, like most of the pyronema family, is distinguished by its brittleness and has a characteristic red bright color. The spores of the fungus have the shape of an ellipse, almost colorless, densely dotted with small growths (warts).

Immediately, the pulp of the fungus itself is quite thin without any pronounced smell and taste.

Peculiarities of fruiting species

The season of fruiting skutellinia is summer-autumn, most often this mushroom can be found in wet weather, growing on a felled dead tree, fallen dead trees, stumps. Often, apothecia of this species are located on the soil. However, starting to dig out the mushrooms for their subsequent collection, you can find that under the top layer of soil is the most attractive substrate for the growth of fungi - rotten tree branches.

Temperature indicators for the best growth of these mushrooms range from 22 to 28 degrees. In this case, a prerequisite - high humidity of the soil and air. It is for this reason that the peak of fruiting saucer-shaped skutellia coincides with the beginning of the warm season.

As a rule, this type of mushroom grows in a heap - in small groups, so it will not take a lot of effort to find them. It also attracts the attention of mushroom pickers and their characteristic appearance, namely, the bright color of the fruit body. These mushrooms are cut off with a sharp knife in order not to damage both the fruit body of the scutellia and the mycelium.

Edibility of the fungus

 Edibility of the thyroid scutellia
The saucer-shaped skutellia belongs to the category of inedible species of mushrooms, which is explained by its small size.

Related species

There are several species of the family of pitsits, outwardly similar to such a mushroom as scutellinia, which, like this species, have a characteristic bristly fringe located along the edge of the fruiting body.

Dark chestnut patzitsa - this species refers to conditionally edible mushrooms. The shape of the fruit body is spherical, with growing it becomes more like a disk or a small saucer, the maximum diameter does not exceed 50-60 mm.

The inner surface of this mushroom has a brown-olive color with a pleasant matte shade, the color of the outer part is chestnut with characteristic whitish growths - pips. The pulp of the fungus does not have a certain smell, rather thin and fragile.

The fruiting season of this species is from May to early autumn. Often grows in the vicinity of mushrooms such as morel hats. Most often, their main habitat is wet areas of soil in mixed and coniferous forests. Fruiting is carried out annually, in groups. This similar type of mushroom is the most common among all types of pecits, culinary processing of dark chestnut pecici means boiling and drying them.

Also, another similar species is conditionally edible mushroom - blister pizzitsa, fructifying from May to mid-autumn.
