How to choose a pomegranate for storage

  1. If you pay due attention to this stage, moderately ripe fruits will lie at home for about 10-12 months. In this case, you can easily transport grenades, without fear of them to wipe.
  2. In the selection process, attention must be paid to weight and size. The diameter of the fruit should be at least 8 cm. It is advisable to give preference to grenades from 10 cm.
  3. As for the weight category, a good garnet has a high density (without voids). Buy fruits weighing from 450 grams. and higher. This indicator is a consequence of full ripeness, the grains are filled with juice.
  4. A good pomegranate has a thin red skin with orange patches (not always). Matte shell should be dry and dense. Too pale grenades are not suitable for storage.
  5. Inspect selected specimens for brown stains, cracks, and other types of damage. Feel the pomegranate, it should crackle a little when pressed.
  6. To appreciate ripeness, tap on the shell with your finger. If you hear the sound of metal, the fruits are moderately ripe (not overripe), you can buy them for long-term storage.
  7. The best period for buying a crop is considered the middle and the end of November. At this time, foreign fruits are being delivered to the counters. Appreciate the “crown” if it is rather dry, the fruit is ripe and of high quality.

Pomegranate storage features

  1. Depending on the expected time of use, a place for storage is also selected. You can plug the fruits into clay, put them in the fridge, freezer or drawers.Often, grenades are sent to the balcony and loggia.
  2. Pomegranates are distinguished by high juiciness, because each grain is filled with juice. In the process of extracting moisture from the cavity evaporates, exposing the product to dryness. For this reason, you need to wrap the fruit with parchment.
  3. If you bought some pomegranates, put them in a box, transferring them with album sheets or baking paper. Do not use old newspapers, paint leaks into the peel.
  4. The use of paper will ensure the absorption of excess moisture, which means that the products will not be covered with mold and will not rot. Change the backing when it's wet.
  5. Experienced housewives grease the pomegranate shell with clay. Bulk composition diluted to a pasty consistency, the product can be purchased at a pharmacy or hardware store. However, only unripe grenades can be stored in this way, so they are sorted in advance.

Method number 1. Cold storage

  1. You can maintain optimal conditions in the refrigerator. To do this, do not wash the grenades, sort them, exclude spoiled ones. Wrap each fruit with parchment or album sheets.
  2. Remove the fruit drawer, it is in the bottom.Wash the container with baking soda, leave to drain the liquid. Make sure the box is dry.
  3. Line the bottom of the paper. Now begin to spread the fruits in rows, do not be afraid to send grenades at each other. It is not worth much to wrap them with parchment, it is important to ensure the circulation of air.
  4. When you lay out all the fruit, place a sheet of paper on top. Slide the drawer, adjust the temperature to the desired level - from 0 to 4 degrees.
  5. In this state, the necessary conditions are provided; fruits can lie for 2-3 months. Once a week, conduct an audit, change the fruits in some places, exclude damage.
  6. If you have a basement or cellar, lay out the grenades wrapped in parchment on the shelves. Try to stick to one row. The less often grenades touch each other, the better.

Method number 2. Storage in the freezer

  1. Pomegranate can be easily frozen, without losing its beneficial properties. You can store in a grainy or solid form. In the latter case, select the ripest specimens, wipe them out, put them in plastic containers and cork. If possible, deflate air from the tank.
  2. If we talk about freezing the grains, everything is simple and transparent here. Battered, small, scratched or cracked specimens are suitable for storage. They need to be washed, then cleaned.
  3. All partitions are thrown away, only grains remain. Rinse them, throwing in a colander. Dry, put in sealed bags (preferably vacuum). Deflate the air, send it to freeze.

Method number 3. Clay Storage

  1. The fruits poured with clay need to be laid out in wooden ventilated boxes. After that, the product is aged in a dry room on a glazed loggia or in a dry closet. The temperature should be above 10 degrees.
  2. To begin the manipulation, buy white clay. Send it to the oven and calcine for disinfection. Dilute the composition with filtered water to a paste-like consistency.
  3. Now dip each fruit in the solution, put it on the paper to dry. After 20 hours, repeat the manipulations to provide a second layer.
  4. Complete the treatment by watering the dry tail with clay. Wait until it hardens, put the grenades in a wooden box and take them to the loggia.

Before giving preference to one or another method, familiarize yourself with the fruit storage conditions. Humidity should vary between 80-90%, a smaller figure contributes to drying. Pomegranates need a temperature of 0-4 degrees. You should not choose too light or, on the contrary, a dark room. Send the fruit in a place with medium illumination.
