How to care for a Chinese rose at home

Chinese roses have dark green shiny leaves and bright velvet inflorescences that appear on the branches in the middle or late spring. The height of adult indoor bushes is 1.5–2 m. The plant, also called hibiscus, is grown in apartments and offices. In some countries, the inflorescences are used to prepare hair dye, and the shoots of the Chinese rose are eaten. Caring for indoor scrub is no more difficult than for orchid or bamboo.

How to care for a Chinese rose

Lighting

Ornamental shrubs are contraindicated in direct sunlight. After contact with ultraviolet, small yellow spots remain on the leaves, which gradually increase and spread to the shoots. Burns weaken the immune system of the Chinese rose and make it vulnerable to diseases and spider mites.

Hibiscus does not like the shadow. The sun's rays are responsible for photosynthesis and the growth of young shoots. The Chinese rose, devoid of ultraviolet light, weakens and sheds leaves.

A pot with a decorative plant is placed on the southern or eastern window-sills. The windows are covered with blinds or thin tulle, which softens and scatters the sun's rays. Pot with hibiscus can be put on a special stand next to the sill. Chinese rose will be protected from burns.

In winter, the ornamental bush rests, it needs a minimum of light and water. If the owners of Chinese roses have flowered from spring to mid-summer, in December and January, the plant will have to illuminate the table lamps. The electric device is placed at a distance of 30–40 cm from the ornamental shrub. The lamp is turned on for 4–5 hours to increase the length of the daylight hours.

In the summer, a pot with a Chinese rose is carried out in the garden or on the balcony. The pot is buried in the ground under a spreading tree so that the hibiscus is always in the shade. Fresh air strengthens the immune system of the plant and activates flowering.

Tip: If there are burns on the leaves of a Chinese rose, you need to prepare a solution of white sugar and distilled water. Sweet liquid wipe damaged parts of the flower 2-3 times a day.Means is quickly absorbed and starts regeneration of leaves.

Watering

In the summer of hibiscus need a lot of water. Fluid due to high temperatures evaporates from the soil. Dry roots rot quickly, and the plant dies. Chinese rose watered with settled or thawed water heated to 30-35 degrees. Moisture the substrate 2-3 times a week. Liquid is applied when the top layer of the soil dries out for 2-4 cm. The earth is loosened before irrigation in order to saturate it with oxygen and increase the absorption of moisture.

Hibiscus does not tolerate dry air. Next to the pot, it is advised to place bowls filled with cool distilled water or pieces of ice. The liquid under the influence of sunlight gradually evaporates, moistening and cooling the air on the windowsill.

Chinese rose is useful to spray from the spray. Leaves and shoots moisturize in the early morning so that the moisture has time to evaporate. If water droplets remain on the plant, they will attract ultraviolet light that will burn the hibiscus.

In the evening, the ornamental shrub is wiped with a damp cloth, cleaning dust. Indoor flower quickly absorbs moisture. Instead of ordinary water, you can use a sugar solution.Sweet liquid provides plant nutrients.

In summer and winter it is useful to bathe hibiscus. Buds and inflorescences are closed with plastic bags so that moisture does not fall on them. Petals because of water wither and fall. Food film and close the ground. The leaves before bathing can be sprayed with soapy water to prevent spider mites. The flower is placed under a weak stream of water at room temperature and held for 10–15 minutes. The plant after water treatments left in the bathroom until dry. Wet hibiscus protect from drafts and direct sunlight.

Water in the summer poured into the pan. The container is filled with small pebbles, which is watered with boiling water before use for disinfection. Several tablets of activated charcoal or wood ash powder can be added to the liquid. Components disinfect water and protect against the appearance of fungus, so it stays fresh longer. The roots of Chinese roses absorb the required amount of moisture in 2-3 hours. Leftovers are poured so that they do not stagnate.

In winter, the ornamental shrub is watered twice a month. When the heating is turned on and the air becomes dry, hibiscus begin to spray with settled water. The liquid protects the plant from spider mites and diseases.

Fertilizer and temperature conditions

Feeds for Chinese roses contribute to the period of bud formation and flowering. The ornamental shrub is fertilized twice a month. Buy drugs for flowering plants. Suitable "Kemira plus" or a mixture of potassium and phosphorus. In winter, the dose of feed is reduced by 4 times. The tool is introduced into the substrate every 1.5–2 months. From November to March, you can abandon fertilizers so that the Chinese rose can rest and prepare for the growing season.

Comfortable temperature for hibiscus is + 25-18 degrees in summer. In winter, the figure drops to + 15–13. The Chinese rose dies at sub-zero temperatures. If the room is cold, you can wrap the plant pot with cling film or newspapers, move the pot to the heater or the battery, but do not forget to humidify the air from the sprayer.

In winter, you should not raise the temperature above +14 degrees. The cool climate creates ideal conditions for the formation of kidneys. At + 12–15, the Chinese rose rests and recovers, and is prepared for the growing season.

Trimming and transplanting

Young ornamental shrubs that are less than 5 years old are transplanted into new pots annually. The pot should be 2-3 cm more than the previous one. In too large tanks, the root system expands, the green mass increases, and the buds practically do not form. To inflorescence was a lot, the Chinese rose is transplanted into a small and cramped pot.

 Hibiscus pruning

Buy clay or plastic vases with drainage holes and trays. The containers are filled with a nutritious and light mixture that allows moisture and air to pass through. Flower shops pick up the substrate intended for hibiscus. At home, mixed:

  • sod land - 2 parts;
  • sand - 1 part;
  • peat or humus - 1 part.

In the substrate add grated foam or small pebbles. Drainage components make the soil loose.

Land brought from the garden or vegetable garden, you can collect the soil on the edge of the forest. Sand and soil are calcined. The substrate is disinfected in a double boiler or oven, spilled with boiling water or a dark pink solution of manganese. High temperatures destroy weed spores and insect eggs.

The treated land is mixed with peat and insisted for several days to create beneficial bacteria in the soil. The pot is filled to a third with expanded clay or pebbles. Drainage components are washed in a soapy solution. Above the expanded clay poured a thin layer of substrate with foam.

Hibiscus before transplanting do not water a week to the soil in the flowerpot dried. The wooden handle of the scapula or knife knocks on the walls of the pot. When the earth is separated, the container is turned over. Chinese rose hold the stem and gently scroll the pot, and then removed. With the root system, they clean off the extra substrate, but do not touch the earthen clod. The base of an ornamental shrub is rolled over into a new pot, sprinkled with soil. Substrate lightly tamped, watered.

The plant is transplanted before transplanting. The procedure is carried out in the spring before the appearance of buds. Thanks to pruning a dense and lush crown is formed with a large number of inflorescences. Choose the longest shoots and shorten by 2/3.

Extras are removed with a sharp knife or pruner. Ordinary scissors will do. The tool is wiped with alcohol before use.The blade is processed after each remote shoot to prevent infection and rotting of the Chinese rose. The cut place is smeared with garden pitch so that the juice does not flow. You can sprinkle with powdered activated carbon or wood ash. Components disinfect open wounds and destroy bacteria, accelerating healing.

Pruning can be done in March so that the Chinese rose blooms in spring. If it is necessary to delay the formation of buds, the removal of healthy shoots is postponed until May. Cut not only green, but dry branches, on which there are no leaves. Also remove the diseased part of the ornamental shrub to stop the infection.

When artificially delayed flowering hibiscus transplanted in late May. Watering is reduced. Ensure that the earth does not dry out, but make a small amount of water. In the middle of summer pruning is repeated. Fertilizers begin to be applied in June or July.

Breeding

Healthy cuttings remaining after pruning are not discarded. Choose specimens with leaves and 2–3 knots. Blanks are planted in plastic cups filled with a substrate for Chinese roses.Saplings are watered and covered with glass jars to create a humid and warm microclimate inside the tank.

 Hibiscus reproduction

The plant is placed in a warm place for a month. Hibiscus will take 20-30 days to take root. Saplings periodically watered to keep the land dry, and air out. Banks are removed for 10-20 minutes, and then returned. Grown up seedlings are transferred to clay or plastic pots, watered and fertilized. Young shoots can be fed syrup. For a glass of water take 1-2 tbsp. l white sugar and stir until the crystals completely dissolve. 200-250 ml of sweet fertilizer is poured into each pot.

Hibiscus are propagated not only by cuttings, but also by seeds. Planting material is formed in the buds after shedding petals. Seeds are first soaked in a growth-stimulating solution, and after 24 hours they are washed with water and pale pink potassium permanganate. The blank is wrapped in a wet cloth and put in a plastic bag. Planting material is kept near the battery or heater until sprouts appear.

Hatching seeds are planted in a box with a substrate for hibiscus and covered with glass. A clear cover is removed when 2–3 full leaves are formed on the seedlings. Grown up Chinese roses dive and transplant in separate pots.

Causes of yellow leaves

Hibiscus does not tolerate water from the tap. Impurities of chlorine and calcium are deposited in the soil and affect the root system. The lower leaves of the Chinese rose fall, and the new ones acquire a yellowish tint. Iron supplements will help cure the plant. If you do not defend the water and do not use water, the Chinese rose will stop blooming, and the leaves will completely fall off, and the branches will become bare.

Yellow streaks appear when there is a shortage of nitrogen and potassium. Spots of golden or pale green hue occur when fertilizer is oversupplied. Make-ups are brought no more than 2 times a month, and in winter they forget about the existence of fertilizers and allow hibiscus to rest.

During flowering leaves turn yellow due to the large number of buds. The ornamental bush spends all resources on the formation and development of inflorescences. In such cases, the plant is watered with sweet water and fertilized 3-4 times a month to provide the Chinese rose with nutrients. You can carefully cut or tear new buds.

The leaves turn yellow due to lack of light. The pot, which is constantly in the shade, moves closer to the window and arrange sunbathing. It is necessary to protect hibiscus from drafts. They reduce immunity and lead to leaf fall.

Chinese rose does not bloom

The ornamental shrub throws out inflorescences annually. Buds are formed in spring or summer. If the hibiscus does not bloom, you need to carefully look to him.

 Chinese rose does not bloom

Inflorescences may be absent due to a sharp change in temperature. Buds are laid in a cool room. If you drastically move hibiscus from a room where it was + 12–14 into heat or put it next to a battery, the plant will throw off future buds and leaves.

Chinese rose does not bloom due to lack of light or fertilizer, irregular watering. Do not abuse the nitrogen feeds. They stimulate the growth of green mass and stop the formation of inflorescences. A hibiscus overfed with nitrogen will have a thick and lush crown without a single bud.

Inflorescences fall due to drafts and dry air. The leaves of Chinese roses in winter and summer need to be sprayed and wiped with a damp cloth, but the buds can not be touched. It is not recommended to often turn a decorative bush or transfer from one window sill to another.

In the absence of buds it is worth replacing the top layer of soil. It is carefully removed with a spatula, trying not to damage the roots. New soil is mixed with rotten compost and dried seaweed. Supplements supply hibiscus with nutrients needed for flowering.

Diseases and pests

A sharp change in temperature and drafts lead to the appearance of a fungal infection. In the infected plant, the leaves dry and become covered with black spots. Watering at the time of treatment is reduced or stopped. It is important that the soil remains slightly wet, but no liquid is accumulated in the pan. The roots affected by the fungus are cleaned from the soil and soaked for several hours in a weak solution of manganese. Blackened shoots and leaves are cut, wounds are dusted with activated charcoal and dried.

For fungal diseases caused by a lack of nutrients, the crown of the Chinese rose is sprayed with liquid fertilizers and fungicides.

Chinese rose attacks spider mite. Insects settle on the bottom sheets. The first symptom is yellow dots and thin cobwebs that entangle the stem. Pests destroy the solution "Fundazol."In 1 liter of water, 2 g of the suspension is poured and a decorative bush is sprayed. The treatment is repeated several times, the break is 1 week.

At the initial stage of infection you can do without insecticides. Spider mite is destroyed by soapy water. Means wipe the leaves and branches several times a week.

Hibiscus, living on the street, can attack aphid. Small bugs hard to notice. Yellowing leaves and a sweetish bloom indicate insect infection. Chinese rose sprayed "Nicotine sulfate." On 1 liter of water take 1 g of the substance. Spend several treatments to aphid disappeared completely.

Even beginners who previously did not have indoor plants will be able to care for the Chinese rose. Hibiscus is afraid of changes in temperature, direct sunlight, cold water and drafts. Loves scattered ultraviolet light, warmth and organic make-up. If you regularly water, fertilize and prune the plant, it will please with a lush crown and bright colors.
