How to get rid of ear congestion at home

Each of us, whether an adult or a child, sometimes experiences a congestion in the ears. This is a very unpleasant phenomenon, and it occurs for various reasons: illness, pressure drops, when moving in transport or when climbing or descending from a height.

How to get rid of congestion in the ears

When stuffiness occurs, it feels as if a liquid has accumulated in the ears or a stopper has formed. This gives a certain discomfort and may be accompanied by dizziness, a slight crack in the ear, and hearing impairment.

If the congestion is not associated with the disease, then it does not entail serious consequences and is a temporary phenomenon that goes away by itself. However, if the ear does not disappear for a long time, you can use methods that will help to cope with this unpleasant symptom.

Determine the cause

Before taking any measures, it is necessary to determine what could cause congestion of the ear. If a person has just descended from the plane, this is one thing, but if the congestion is accompanied by painful sensations, this is another, therefore, the measures applied to eliminate this problem will be different.

Impairment of hearing may indicate that sulfur has accumulated in the auricles, which must be removed. If the congestion does not go away after two days, this is already a reason to contact a specialist who will prescribe the appropriate treatment.

If water gets into your ear

Sometimes after visiting a beach, pool or shower a small amount of water gets into the Eustachian tubes, this can also provoke congestion in the ears. Try to get rid of the liquid immediately, the more time passes, the harder it will be to do it.

How to remove water from the ear

Some simple exercises with which you can “free” your ear:

  1. Stand on one leg, the second preload, tilt your head to the side, where the ear is laid. Slowly jump on one leg several times. At the same time shake your head, helping the liquid to go outside.
  2. Lie on its side, on the side where water accumulated in the ear. Keep ear down. After half an hour, the liquid should flow out.
  3. Insert the index finger into the ear and create a vacuum in the ear. At the same time lightly press on the membrane, it contributes to the suction of the liquid. Movement must be very careful not to injure yourself.

If the ears are laid as a result of pressure drops

Ear-stuffing syndrome arises from flying in an airplane or traveling in the mountains, this is due to high changes in air pressure.

The easiest way to get rid of this is to try to remove the air from the inner ear with a deep yawn or swallowing. By the way, ordinary chewing gum, which causes salivation, is very effective in this case.

The second way is to hold the nostrils with your fingers and exhale into the nose. This will adjust the air pressure. If the “exercise” is done correctly, a light pop or click will follow.

To avoid congestion in the ears, it is recommended to take antihistamines before departure or trip (about half an hour). This will reduce irritation inside the ear canal, thereby facilitating the passage of air through the ear.

You can also buy special headphones - earplugs. They will reduce the air pressure drops, thus eliminating the possible congestion in the ears.

If congestion is caused by infection

If the ear is laid within 2 days, and touching the auricle causes pain, most likely an infection has penetrated into the ear. Be sure to see a doctor who, in accordance with the diagnosis, prescribe treatment.

 Ear congestion caused by infection

As a rule, antibiotics are prescribed for infections, which are taken strictly in accordance with the instructions.

Effective ear drops, such as fire retardant-benzocaine. This is a local anesthetic that not only removes congestion, but also reduces pain.

You can use the accompanying methods of treatment:

  1. Warm dry compress (hot water bottle or bottle), put on a sore ear. Relieves congestion and pain.
  2. Antihistamines, but when they are taken it is necessary to drink plenty of water, as they dry the airways.
  3. Gargling with saline water. You can also add honey and lemon juice. This procedure has a soothing effect on the Eustachian tubes.
  4. Helps relieve painful conditions of tea tree oil, which has powerful antimicrobial and antiseptic properties. How to use it: mix 2 teaspoons of teaspoon and coconut oil, warm it slightly and put it in your ear. Remove excess cotton swab.
  5. Plentiful frequent drinking. Hot liquid (tea, herbal tea, decoction, broth, hot milk) helps to thin the mucus in the ears, and also relieves nasal congestion.

Complications after otitis

Congestion may be a residual phenomenon after purulent otitis. It is eliminated with the help of a unique beekeeping product - propolis. To do this, you need to prepare the tincture: 30 grams of crushed propolis, alcohol 70% percent (100 ml). Insist for 7 days in a dark place, strain. Before use, clean the ear with a cotton swab and insert a cotton swab dipped in tincture into the ear.

The consequences of otitis can be dealt with using onions. Squeeze juice from a bulb, dilute with vodka or alcohol in a ratio of 4 to 1.Bury two times a day (morning and evening). This method is prohibited in purulent otitis.

Congestion due to sulfuric plug

Accumulation and tamping in the ear canal of sulfur can also be the cause of congestion in the ear. You can get rid of it with the help of special drugs that are sold in a pharmacy. If the process is strongly started, the doctor will perform the procedure for removing the sulfuric plug. Most often, traffic jams occur in people who wear hearing aids all the time.

Ear congestion due to sulfuric plug

In no case should you try to remove the sulfur from the ear using cotton swabs and other sharp objects, using them you can push the cork even deeper.

To dissolve sulfur and remove the liquid, you can try dropping into the ear with a pipette a solution of apple cider vinegar and isopropyl alcohol (in equal proportions) or hydrogen peroxide.

As an alternative - washing the auricle with warm water. This procedure will soften the sulfur so that it can be removed by itself. To do this, heat the water, take 3-4 ml with a sterile syringe. Bend the head and gently pour the liquid into the ear and hold it for 5 minutes, then tilt the head in the other direction. Water along with sulfur will gradually flow out of the ear.

If you suspect an infection in the ear or perforation of the eardrum, it is necessary to exclude any liquid from entering the auricle and immediately go to the otolaryngologist.

If your ear is laid, do not panic, first you need to find out the reason, and only then take action. Do not self-medicate and consult a doctor in time.
