How to store beans in order not to get bugs

Beans - very tasty and healthy culture, which gives a rich harvest. That is why the landing under the beans is given a special place in the sun. However, planting and growing a rich harvest is not enough, it is very important to preserve it. After all, apart from you, there are those who wish to feast on delicious beans, namely, a bean seed. Even if you have removed the beans in an airtight container, after a couple of months you can find only leaky fruits eaten by this pest. That is why the storage of beans is fundamentally different from the storage of other cereals.

How to store beans in order not to get bugs

Bean weevil

This insect lives in the beds, in the place of storage of beans (for example, in warehouses), right in the green pods. For active life and breeding pests need high humidity, food in the form of beans and the warm season. The weevil penetrates into the bean pod and lays in it about 30-50 larvae. After a few weeks, the larvae grow and turn into adults. The female can lay eggs not only in the pod of beans, but also inside the bean itself. This is where pests can appear in a hermetically sealed jar.

It is necessary to get rid of the bean kernels at the planting stage. Before planting beans, the ground is carefully treated with pesticides. Only ideally even and absolutely whole grains of beans must be allowed to land. The weevil lays the larvae inside the bean, under its thin film. If the larvae along with the infected bean fall into the ground - you can spoil the entire crop.

How to prepare beans for storage

The security of the beans is its drying. Properly dried beans can be stored for years, and no pests are not afraid of it.

  1. We collect the beans from the garden, right in the pods.
  2. Next, the beans should be left in a well-ventilated and sunny place. In the villages, the beans were always dried on the fence.
  3. You can sprinkle beans on the balcony by pre-laying a newspaper or clean paper on the floor.
  4. It takes about 10-15 days to dry the beans. The beans are dried if the pod turns yellow, crumbly, slightly open. Grains must be hard.
  5. After that, the beans must be poured on a baking sheet and slightly heated. The temperature of heating is about 60 degrees, the time is at least half an hour. The heat kills possible larvae and helps the beans to be stored for much longer.
  6. Heated beans can be eaten, but they are not suitable for planting.
  7. If you need seeds that remain viable, but are protected from pests, place a bag of beans for a while in the freezer. Low temperatures will destroy the larvae of the weevil, but leave the grain “alive”.

After such a phased processing can not be afraid of bugs and other pests.

Where and what to store beans

After drying, the beans should be placed in an airtight container. This can be a glass jar, plastic bag or plastic container. The main thing is that no living creature could get inside. If you are going to store beans for a long time, you can proceed as follows. Heat the beans on a baking sheet or in a dry skillet with a lid. Do not allow beans to burst. After that, transfer them to clean sterilized jars and close the lid.The bank should be opened only in winter.

Keep beans in a cool and dark place. If you are afraid that in the beans can get a kernel, beans must be kept in the cold. Grains perfectly tolerate low temperatures and do not lose their taste and nutritional properties. Before the onset of frost beans can be kept in the freezer, and then put on the balcony.

It is very important not to keep the beans warm - humid and warm air contributes to the germination of the beans. They do not eat bean sprouts for food, but it is quite possible to plant them (if there is spring in the yard). If you are going to store the beans in a canvas bag, first lower it into a saline solution. After that, dry the fabric without rinsing. Salty bag will protect your beans not only from the kernels, but also from other insects.

How to save green beans

Green beans have a special taste and delicate aroma. If you want to keep the delicate spring taste of young beans, you can just freeze it.

To freeze you need to take fresh, just collected pods. Green bean pods should be thoroughly washed and their tails cut off. You also need to cut all the black dots and damage on the surface of the pod. If before cooking the beans you cut it into small pieces, do so. Bean pods can be frozen and whole, without cutting.

Then the beans need to blanch. Throw the bean pods in boiling water for three minutes, and next to put a large cup with ice. When three minutes have expired, remove the beans from the boiling water and dip into the icy water. This method of processing beans will save maximum useful properties and taste.

Beans must be thoroughly dried before freezing. Spread the processed pieces of beans on a clean napkin and allow excess water to drain. Otherwise, ice crystals are formed on the grains, which will deprive the green beans of a special flavor. After drying, distribute the pods into packets so that, if necessary, take only one portion and do not defrost the excess.
