Serengeti - description of the breed and character of the cat

The family of the Serengeti breed in the world is only a few hundred individuals. But each individual is a standard, has a unique color and uniqueness! This rare breed was bred in order to bring more grace and charm to the wild African nature.

 Serengeti

The history of the breed

As it is known, African jungles and deserts are not home to the Serengeti, America is considered to be its homeland. The founder of the breed Karen Southman in the 90s of the 20th century led labor activity in the wildlife preserve. The inhabitant of the reserve, a wild cat belonging to the Serval breed, simply charmed Karen. And she decided to repeat all the charm and charm of a wild cat at home, but subject to the condition that servals should not have independently participated in the expansion of the population.

Karen Southman made a decision to cross an eastern shorthair cat with a Bengal cat. This decision was not without a soil one, because four years of in-depth analysis and research work formed the basis of its choice. All these years, she carefully selected the breed, all animals were necessarily subjected to ultrasound for the presence of disease. And this work today is invaluable, because cats of the Serengeti breed are among the most expensive cats in the whole world, and not only because of their number.

On a global scale, this breed of cats is not massively excreted, only a few dozen geneticists who breed serengeti are known.

Characteristics of the breed

A huge wild cat and a domesticated affectionate gave birth to charming, original kittens. They have absolutely no aggressive character traits, although they have external predatory signs. It is this original feature that makes them welcome pets in every family.

Surprisingly and the fact that they are very similar in appearance to servals, do not even have any chromosomes from them.

  1. The baby serengeti has a flat wedge-shaped head. The outline of the head is soft, with soft roundings without sharp lines and corners. Pronounced chin, but by no means powerful, cheeks not pronounced, they smoothly round the outline of the head.
  2. They are always very attentive and wary, which is why they have ears on their crown. And the size of the ears are the same with the size of the head of a kitten.
  3. Their inborn wariness, characteristic of them, not only rewarded representatives of this breed with large ears, but also with wide-set eyes. They have honey color, large and round. By the way, the color can be not only honey, there are also often cats of this breed with other yellow shades, even nutty and light green can often be found.
  4. Their nose is evenly wide along the entire length and always has only a dark lobe.
  5. They have long whiskers, because with their alertness, their sense of touch should be at their peak.
  6. Representatives of the breed have an elongated high neck, which has an extension from the head to the shoulders.

From the first week, kittens are distinguished by certain features that are unique to them; they are both elegant and muscular.Muscularity, again, gives them a significant origin, although their muscles are significantly different from wild cats.

Ideally, representatives of this breed of cats have an average body size. Distinctive features of the Serengeti breed are always a straight back and very slight elongation of the body along the back.

Males are always larger than females. The limbs of these individuals are long and strong. Cats have oval non-massive paws, the tail is never elongated, but always massive. The tip of the tail has a brush painted black.

The weight of representatives of this breed is quite significant. The female weighs up to 12 kg, and the males even reach 15 kg.

Another striking difference of this breed from the rest is that the serengeti has absolutely no undercoat, as a result of which they are deprived of "manes" and "shaniki", they have a sporty body structure. Representatives of the breed proudly wear a pleasant to the touch thin, short coat, while the process of molting in them happens completely unnoticed by the people around them.

This breed of cats has the longest limbs, so they can reach two meters in a jump.

Colors

This breed can have several types of color:

 Serengeti cat color

  • Sometimes black spotted tabby (has contrasting black spots).
  • Black, smoky or with shades of gray (has ghostly spotting).

Despite the color, the spots are always the same, they should be rounded, slightly elongated only in a horizontal position. The presence of a dark path that comes from the inner corners of the eyes is very much appreciated.

But with all the advantages, there is, unfortunately, a disadvantage in their coloring - these are ordinary white, red, and spotted cats. However, in ordinary spotted cats, the spots are elongated in the vertical direction, which is not characteristic of the representatives of the serengeti.

Character and temper

The Serengeti is a very sociable cat, which is unlikely to sit silently in the presence of the owner. The talkativeness and predatory graceful posture are perhaps the most striking features of the breed in order to guess from the first words about which cat is meant. They have a very rich vocabulary, so they never get tired of following the owner and meowing in their own language. Excessive sociability is tedious, but it is impossible to persuade a pussy to be silent.

These cats are very stubborn, so it doesn't make any sense to forbid them. They, by virtue of their persistent nature, always achieve the desired. Therefore, in order to protect furniture, accessories and other household items, it is worthwhile to provide the cat with special toys and all kinds of permissible entertainment.

In addition, they are very fearless, because they have the roots of wild animals. They are street dogs do not bear absolutely no threat. Most likely, when meeting with those of the Serenges, first of all they will be the attacking side. It is not necessary to let the animal go for a walk outside on its own, because, due to its combat nature, the choice of an opponent may not fall on a weak dog or other animal.

Nevertheless, they are leaders not only on the street, and in the house these cats occupy leading positions. Even if someone does not agree with their decision, this does not concern them, and they are unshakable in their conviction. If you take the leading side of the cat, then it will always mutually respond to the owner with tenderness and affection.

Health and body features

This breed of cats has a greater predisposition to urolithiasis. It is important to identify and prevent disease at the time. You also need to know that females get sick with this disease much less often than males. Moreover, the disease proceeds completely unnoticed, the animal does not show any alarming signals, no symptoms are visible, but a sudden malaise manifests itself immediately. For example, the first signal that needs to be taken into account when a kitten can’t painfully go to the toilet for a long time, when licking the genital opening, the animal mews plaintively, suddenly the pet urinates somewhere before reaching the toilet. Other signals are also possible when the kitten behaves outside the box. Self-treatment in this case will not bring the desired results, and only can aggravate the situation. Only a qualified veterinarian has the authority to eliminate the disease.

 Serengeti cat breed

In addition to providing assistance and prescribing the correct treatment, the doctor will advise you to follow a certain diet in order to avoid such diseases. This is the only weak point of representatives of this breed, but otherwise they have excellent health. Usually, according to the state of health and appearance of the pet, one can guess the state of his health. If the tail is a pipe, then this is a sure sign that the cat is not disturbed by anything.

You need to know that crossing the serengeti with Servela is prohibited. Firstly, the kittens will no longer be Serengeti, and secondly, there is a high probability that the offspring will be fruitless.

Typically, representatives of this breed live about 10 years.

Maintenance and care

These are cats that do not cause problems and difficulties to care for them. Like every pet, they need care and attention. Sometimes you need to comb the wool, and wipe your ears and eyes.

What to feed

In no case should the animal be fed with cheap dry food, only premium food, but under the condition that the correctly chosen food is combined with the diet of the cat.

You can not feed cats with potatoes, pork, sea fish and milk. She is suitable for lean veal, and this should be the basis of daily nutrition.

Where to buy a kitten

Considering that there are not so many individuals of this breed in the world, and even specialists who breed them, it is very difficult to answer the question immediately. In Russia and Ukraine there are still no specialized nurseries for growing serengeti, sales in these countries are carried out individually, in private.

Therefore, if you basically want to have only the serengeti and no one else in return, then the Karen Southman kennel in America will always provide you with only the best cats. First, the nursery has an exceptional reputation, and secondly, the breeding of cats is not on the stream. The average cost per kitten is 30 thousand rubles, because the African cheetah cannot be cheap, it is not logical.
